Light for the Future

The Extended Council concludes its weeklong meeting at the Church of the Gesù

It was at the Church of the Gesù, in the heart of Rome, that the members of Father General's Extended Council made a five-step "pilgrimage" on Sunday, January 13. The goal was to express their gratitude to the Lord for their experience of discernment during the past week, assisting Father Sosa to prepare for the announcement of the Society's Universal Apostolic Preferences for the coming years. The group prayed for the illumination of the Holy Spirit, expressing their hope for the implementation of these forms of commitment that will be officially presented to the whole Society of Jesus by Pope Francis in the near future.

After gathering in the chapel of the Madonna della Strada, the group moved to the altar of Saint Ignatius where each member of the Council lit a candle, each one representing a geographical area or an apostolic field of the Society. The group then moved to Fr. Pedro Arrupe's tomb to ask for the spiritual support of our former General. The next stage was in the chapel of the community of the Collegio Internazionale del Gesù, for a time of personal and communal meditation.

Finally, in the rooms of Saint Ignatius (known as the camerette), Father Sosa presided the Eucharist of the feast of the Baptism of Jesus. His homily is available through the following link. It invites us to contemplate the fascinating figure of John the Baptist, a "collaborator" in God's mission and a man of discernment.
