Announcement of Father General’s visit to the Province of Central Africa

The website of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar offers in a short article the context and programme of the visit of Fr. Arturo Sosa, Superior General, to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The central theme of the visit to the Province is: With the youth, for the protection of our common house. Here is the full text of this press release.

Reverend Father Arturo Sosa, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, will be staying in the Province of Central Africa (ACE) from April 22 to May 1, 2019. While ACE has two countries, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Father General will mainly visit Kinshasa, Kimwenza and Kisantu.

The double character of the journey was instrumental in selecting the places of Father General’s trip. First, from 23 to 25 April 2019, in Kinshasa, to participate in the biannual general assembly of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), a structure bringing together the nine Jesuit provinces and regions of the continent. Second, to visit the Province of Central Africa from April 26 to May 1, 2019.

This visit encourages the Province in the breath of the four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) - Promoting Discernment and Spiritual Exercises; Walking with the Excluded; Journeying with Youth; Caring for our Common Home - adopted and published by the Society of Jesus on 19 February 2019. Thus the reason for the selection of the theme: “With the youth, for the protection of our Common Home”. “Common Home” implies not only spiritual attitudes towards Creation and discernment (responsible consumption, responsibility towards future generations, etc.), but also a dimension of combating exclusion (ecological refugees, illegal expropriation, etc.). By taking care of the Common Home, we guarantee a better future for the younger generations.

The stay of Father General in the Central Africa Province can be summarized in three aspects: visiting the Jesuit companions, meeting with local authorities (ecclesial, diplomatic, etc.) and exchanges with partners in mission (collaborators, friends, former students, Ignatian spirituality movements, etc.). The Superior General will visit some houses and works of the Province. Two General Assistants, Fratern Masawe and Vernon D’Cunha, and the President of JCAM, Fr Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator, will accompany him.

After the trip, we will come back to some key moments of Father General’s passage to Central Africa.
