Fundamental Principles

The Promotion of a Consistent Culture of Protection (PCCP) Project is grounded in the following principles:

1) Every person has the right to live in peace. As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and in the Gospel, every child and every adult have the right to live in peace, free from violence. This implies zero tolerance to abuse.

2) Child abuse and harassment of adults are social problems. According to current data, child abuse and harassment of adults (of all kinds) are social problems affecting all institutions in society, including the Church and the Society of Jesus. The Society of Jesus has apologized for the sexual abuse crimes perpetrated by Jesuits, in the past and present times, in Jesuits works. In addition, the Society of Jesus is ensuring that all Provinces and Regions have in place reparation and compensation policies for the victims, as well as PCCP has supported all Jesuit Provinces to put in place policies, protocols, training, and actions to prevent such abuses to happen again.

4) The whole community is necessary to eliminate abuses.

4) The whole community is necessary to eliminate abuses. As shown by current scientific research on abuse prevention and response, the whole community is necessary to eliminate all types of abuse.

5) Every child and every adult have the right to benefit from what science has proven that best prevents and mitigates all types of abuses.

5) Every child and every adult have the right to benefit from what science has proven that best prevents and mitigates all types of abuses. As stated in article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, every person, that is every child and every adult, has the right to participate in science and benefit from scientific advancements. This means that every child and every adult have the right to benefit from what science has proven that best prevents and mitigates all types of abuses, nothing less than that. This dimension is integrated with the faith and spiritual dimensions of our work.

6) PCCP is not committed to do safeguarding but to do safeguarding that improves people’s lives.

6) PCCP is not committed to do safeguarding but to do safeguarding that improves people’s lives. PCCP is not committed to do safeguarding but to doing safeguarding that evidences with qualitative and/or quantitative data to reduce abuse, and contribute to cultivating a culture of protection, care, respect, and friendship.

7) PCCP is grounded in Ignatian Spirituality. As a project of the Society of Jesus, PCCP is grounded in Ignatian Spirituality, integrating key concepts and practices of it, such as discernment and spiritual conversation, in the mission shared with the Ignatian family of contributing to eliminate abuse inside and outside the Church.
