On the path to a reconciled world

The life of those who, in the context of the Society of Jesus and in partnership with the Society, give of themselves to the social apostolate, is a very concrete way of following Jesus by accompanying God's people. This is the theme of Fr. Arturo Sosa's inaugural speech for the Congress of the Social Apostolate that takes place at the Curia of the Society from 4 to 8 November.

From the outset, the General stressed that by inviting those most involved in the Society's social ministry, he wanted the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the SJES to be a propitious moment, a kairos, to give thanks, to discern the directions to be taken, and perhaps even more so to make choices by identifying new or renewed calls from the Lord. The fresh air brought by the Second Vatican Council, and then by the advances offered by the Latin American Bishops' Conference, allowed us to be inspired by the Holy Spirit. We have defined ourselves as "companions at the heart of a mission of reconciliation and justice". These few words determine a whole program of prayer and commitment.

Father Sosa stressed the importance of remembering and giving thanks. He had in mind, among others, Father Arrupe, the Secretaries of the SJES, but also so many people, lay, and religious women and men, who were part with us, Jesuits, of the same body for the mission, the mission of Christ. Then he wished that the Congress would be an opportunity for spiritual renewal, in the spirit of Pope Francis, who always invites us to deepen our relationship with God, the only way to implement truly the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society.

In the last part of his address, Father General offered ten points for reflection and examination, points that could set the tone for the congress and make the participants think. To discover them and to get to know Father Sosa's thoughts more deeply, read his speech by clicking here!
