Father General visits a Paraguay Reduction

Perhaps no other work captures the missionary approach of the Jesuits in Latin America than the Reductions: an apostolate that evangelized the indigenous people of South America while attempting to hold off slavers and soldiers of conquest. Made famous by the film The Mission, they are known as the “Reductions of Paraguay”, even though some of them are located in what is now Argentina or Brazil. The experiment was abruptly halted under pressure from European royal authorities who saw the success of the Jesuit initiative as a threat to their own economic endeavors on the continent. In Paraguay, Father Sosa had the opportunity to visit the Guaraní region and experience a little of this Jesuit history.
