EYM Egypt: A Journey of Faith, Commitment, and Growth

The Eucharistic Youth Movement (EYM) is an international Church Movement for the Christian formation of children and young people of both genders, from ages 7 to 25. It seeks to teach them to live in Jesus’s way by guiding them into a loving, ‘heart to heart’ relationship with Him based on the Ignatian spirituality. The movement prepares young people to live as committed Christian adults dedicated to serving their brothers and sisters in an often unjust and secularized world. EYM is the second-largest youth movement of the Catholic Church, with approximately 1.7 Million children and young participants. It operates in 69 countries across five continents.

EYM was introduced to Egypt in 1948 as the Eucharistic Crusade and rapidly expanded. By 1956, it had established a presence in 21 French Catholic schools, with 800 young participants. Over the decades, EYM Egypt has played an integral role in the spiritual and personal development of thousands of young people. Today, it has grown to include over 5,000 members across 45 centers in Cairo, Alexandria, Mansoura, Minya, Assiut, and Sohag. The movement continues to adapt to contemporary challenges while staying true to its foundational mission of fostering unity, leadership, and faith-based education among youth.

EYM Egypt’s Mission and Objectives

The core mission of EYM Egypt is to nurture Christian youth who dedicate their lives as a daily offering to God, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. The movement emphasizes the formation of young individuals who are committed, mature, and balanced in all aspects of life.

EYM Egypt instills values that empower youth to become positive agents of change, irrespective of the communities they belong to. Future Aspirations and Challenges

Looking ahead, EYM Egypt envisions a future where the movement continues to grow and adapt, reaching more young people across the country. Efforts are being made towards strengthening collaboration with different churches and Christian communities, expanding presence in schools and underserved areas, organizing training programs for young people, and developing service-oriented projects to encourage social responsibility.

EYM Egypt has profoundly shaped the lives of many, fostering personal growth, spiritual development, and religious vocations. Over the past eight years, the movement has led to four Jesuit vocations, along with inspiring other priestly and women’s religious callings.

Marie, a 22-year-old member of the EYM Cairo Office, notes that the Movement taught her how to build a relationship with God, know herself better, and form deeper and more meaningful relationships with others. Similarly, Nesma from the Egypt National Office says that serving in EYM for over 13 years, and being a youth member before that, helped her find purpose in daily life, whether in my academic work or family. “Maybe this is why I am still attached to the group and encouraged to give and serve more in any way I can now”, she says.

EYM Egypt stands as a beacon of faith, education, and leadership development for Christian youth in the country. With its deep-rooted values, extensive reach, and commitment to nurturing responsible and engaged individuals, the Movement continues to leave a profound impact on the lives of thousands. As it evolves, EYM Egypt remains steadfast in its mission to guide and inspire young people, empowering them to live their faith with purpose and dedication.
