A hundred years of grateful memory: Centenary celebration of Manresa magazine

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Manresa magazine, which has remained faithful to its vocation of researching and promoting Ignatian spirituality throughout a century. Its name announces its origins in the city of Manresa, near Barcelona, where Ignatius of Loyola, after his conversion, had the profound spiritual experience that led to the writing of the Spiritual Exercises. In its century of existence, 383 issues have been published, interrupted only by war: first, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and then World War II with the paper shortages it brought (1941).

The main event of this centenary year was a symposium held at the San Ignacio Spirituality Centre in Salamanca (CEI) from 16 - 18 May, with the support of the Province of Spain, the University of Deusto, and the Institute of Spirituality of the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid. The words of greeting and congratulations from Fr Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, in his letter to the editor of the magazine, opened the meeting, which brought together more than 70 people from various parts of Spain (Barcelona, Bilbao, Cordoba, Madrid, Manresa, Salamanca, Seville, Valencia, and Valladolid), as well as Panama and Costa Rica.

Experts in Ignatian spirituality, including José García de Castro, SJ, helped to recall the history of the magazine, explore the essential elements of the Spiritual Exercises (Darío Mollá, SJ), reflect on the subject of the Exercises (Josep M. Rambla, SJ), and review the connection between Ignatian spirituality and spiritual conversation, discernment, and synodality (Juan Antonio Guerrero, SJ). In addition, two round tables presented various ways of updating the art of giving the Exercises: introductory exercises and exercises for young people, exercises through art, exercises and discernment in common, exercises with an ecological or social focus, workshops on interiority, and exercises in contemplation. All the contributions will be published next fall in a double issue of the magazine that will conclude this centennial year.

In his final report, Francisco José Ruiz, SJ, emphasized the gift received from history and the discernment that has allowed Manresa to respond to the changing needs of the times. He also highlighted the two challenges facing the magazine at this historic moment: the ongoing challenge of contextualizing the Exercises and the more recent challenge of community, that is, continuing to explore the interrelationship between individuals and organizations. In his words of thanks and closing remarks, the editor of the magazine, Manuel García Bonasa, SJ, appreciated the majority presence at the symposium of lay people and religious from various congregations who spoke to us about the living face of Ignatian spirituality, committed to the Church in the task that Ignatius of Loyola dreamed of, which is to bring people into contact with their creator.
