Fr Shajumon Chakkalakkal, the new Provincial of the Darjeeling Province
Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General, has nominated Fr Shajumon Chakkalakkal (57) as the next Provincial of the Darjeeling Province.
Shajumon Chakkalakkal was born in 1966 in Kerala and, at the age of 18, he joined the Society of Jesus in the Darjeeling Province. He was ordained a priest in 2001 and pronounced his final vows in 2006. He obtained two Master’s degrees: in English Literature and in Psychology.
Along the years, he had a number of responsibilities within his Province: socius to the Novice Master, Novice Master, Student Counsellor, English teacher and Vice Superior of St Joseph’s College, then Rector and Principal of the St Joseph’s School. In 2018, he became the socius to the Provincial of the Darjeeling Province being at the same time Superior of the Provincial Curia Jesuit community. In 2020, he was asked to move to New Delhi to serve as the socius of the President of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia (JCSA).

Shajumon will take office on 1 December 2023, on the feast of St Edmund
