How to accompany a dioceses in the Synodal process with Discernment | Ignite the Way

Sr Nathalie Becquart, the undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops discusses how to accompany dioceses or local church communities in implementing a synodal process, based on experiences from the Secretariat General of the Synod. She emphasizes two foundational principles: the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit already at work within local churches, and the necessity to start from the concrete realities of each diocese. Recognizing the diversity of diocesan contexts, the process of synodality must be adapted accordingly, focusing on practical and experiential learning rather than theoretical approaches.

The key challenge lies in discerning the concrete fields within each diocese where synodality can be fostered. Central to this process is cultivating a synodal spirituality rooted in personal and communal conversion, prayer, humility, and openness to the Holy Spirit, which grounds the ecclesial discernment process.

Sr Nathalie also underscores the necessity of collaboration and teamwork in accompanying synodal processes, inviting observers from other parishes to witness and learn from ongoing experiences to foster wider participation and creativity. The synodal journey requires patience, creativity, and an open, adaptive approach rather than rigid replication.
