Discernment in the intercultural context | Ignite the Way

In episode 20 of Ignite the Way video series, Fr Hung Pham, a Vietnamese American Jesuit, explores the challenges and strategies involved in discernment within a mixed cultural or intercultural context. Drawing from his personal experience navigating dual cultural identities, Fr Pham emphasizes the significance of creating inclusive spaces where all cultures are visibly represented and respected. Preparation of both physical and symbolic spaces fosters a sense of belonging, which is crucial for group discernment. Prayer, especially incorporating diverse traditions, plays an essential role in bonding and setting the tone for shared discernment.

The discernment process should be anchored in common values, such as Jesus Christ in a Christian context, and guided by an apostolic mission that moves beyond individual needs toward a shared purpose. Fr Pham outlines four dimensions for effective intercultural discernment: anchoring in shared values, orienting purpose beyond self-interest, building consensus through intellectual and spiritual languages, and engaging in sustained, respectful dialogue. Patience, open-mindedness, and humour are vital to this sometimes difficult but ultimately joyful process.

Fr Pham illustrates his points by recounting a classroom experience with students from highly divergent cultural and theological backgrounds. Through patient sharing and listening over a semester, opposing perspectives began to understand one another deeply, highlighting the transformative power of intercultural dialogue and discernment when practiced with respect and empathy.
