The Amazon: environmental heritage and strategic mission

On 5 September, the “Day of the Amazon” is celebrated all over the world. Fr. Arturo Sosa took the opportunity to send a video message to the Brazil Province. The Province has embraced an “apostolic preference for the Amazon” as a core element of its strategic mission.

Father General stressed, once again, that the issues related to Amazonia and the threats which the area faces are numerous and serious. He encourages the Jesuits of Brazil to continue their commitment. He congratulates them for their presence in Amazonia for twenty-five years, a presence marked by originality and adaptation, especially through the Itinerant Team initiative. This faith project emerged from Ignatian spirituality and a desire to live Church in an inculturated and ecumenical setting. The project also testifies to the hope which Jesuits, in collaboration with others, bring to the world as “guardians of creation.”
