The Jesuit vow of poverty – A testimony from Claudio Barriga Domínguez SJ

Claudio, a Jesuit from Chile, invites us to his home in the northern part of the Brazilian Amazon. What strikes you about this “Jesuit residence”? Its great simplicity. Claudio’s life journey led him to believe that, to follow the call of Jesus to religious life that he had heard, he had to come closer to the poor by living a simple life.

Claudio insisted with his superiors that he be sent to the poor, so that he could better identify with them. He did this in Africa, Asia and now in the Amazon. There he benefits from the wisdom of the indigenous people among whom he lives as a pastor!
