Hope and Opportunity: The Jesuits’ mission with Hungary’s Roma people || Jesuits at the Frontiers

The Roma community, making up 10% of Hungary’s population, is the largest minority group in the country. Despite their rich history and cultural contributions, their experiences have been influenced by discrimination and misunderstanding. The Jesuits of Hungary have initiated programs to support Roma youth, such as the Jesuit Roma Residential College for Advanced Studies (JRRC) in Budapest. The institution provides housing, courses, and community programs to foster a positive ethnic identity and empower Roma students to challenge stereotypes and actively participate in Hungarian society.

In 2020, the Jesuits expanded their efforts into rural Hungary, collaborating with the Hungarian Order of Malta and Franciscan sisters to address rural poverty. These programs aim to promote sustainable village lifestyles, education, community engagement, and faith, inspiring Roma youth and contributing to the Christian Roma College Network.
