A Spirituality on the Move: Key Messages from the Pope to His Worldwide Prayer Network

By Cristóbal Fones, SJ – International Director, Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network

On January 23, Pope Francis delivered a profound and hopeful message to representatives of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network during a private audience. In this meeting, he reminded us of our central mission: to promote a spirituality rooted in the Heart of Jesus, which drives us to be living witnesses of His compassionate love for the world.

The Pope highlighted three essential points that illuminate our path:

1. The new encyclical Dilexit Nos as spiritual nourishment
The Holy Father pointed out that his recent encyclical Dilexit Nos will be a valuable resource for deepening the spirituality of the Heart of Jesus, which constitutes the core of our mission. This document invites us to contemplate the infinite love of Christ, a love that transforms us from within and sends us forth to be channels of His mercy in the world. In this sense, the encyclical serves as a guide to renew our spiritual life and our commitment to others, especially the most vulnerable.

2. A formative journey from heart to heart
The Pope emphasized that our formative journey, The Way of the Heart, adequately reflects two essential dynamics of our spirituality: on one hand, the journey of Jesus, which from His Sacred Heart opens to the heart of the world; and on the other hand, our personal journey, which moves from our wounded heart toward the centre of His Mercy. This dual movement is an invitation to allow ourselves to be transformed by God’s love and to bear witness to that love in our communities and in the world.

3. Mary, pilgrim of hope, as a guide on the journey
The Holy Father also reminded us of Mary’s fundamental role in our spirituality. As a pilgrim of hope, Mary teaches us to nurture our friendship with the Lord and to walk with confidence, guided by the presence of the Holy Spirit. In her, we find a model of faith and love that inspires us to live our mission with generosity and joy.

The Jubilee 2025: Prayer and Compassion in Action

Pope Francis has entrusted us with a special mission in the context of the Jubilee 2025: to help people and communities live this time of grace as a journey where prayer and compassion are inseparably united. He has called us to promote a spirituality that links prayer with closeness to the marginalized, prayer with works of mercy.

This Jubilee represents a unique opportunity to live a love expressed more in deeds than in words, a love that activates our Christian life in relation to our brothers and sisters, especially the most vulnerable. It is a prayer that does not remain solely in the personal realm but drives us to encounter our neighbour, to be instruments of God’s mercy in the world.

The Pope’s Prayer Intentions: A Spiritual Compass for the Jubilee

On this journey, the Pope’s monthly prayer intentions are a compass that guides us toward the realities that require our intercession and commitment. These intentions, which reflect the needs of the world and the mission of the Church, invite us to open our hearts to the challenges of our time.

Knowing them, praying them in community, spreading them, and using the formative materials offered by our international projects, such as The Pope Video and Click To Pray, are concrete ways to respond to this call. Actively participating in this prayer network, whether in our parish groups, communities, and movements, or personally, is already a way of living our faith in a committed and supportive manner during this time. This will transform our perspective and help us discern the concrete ways in which we are called to serve, according to our contexts.

An Invitation to Local Communities

To facilitate this spiritual experience during the Jubilee, we have sent a letter to all Episcopal Conferences and Jubilee temples in Rome, in collaboration with the Dicastery for Evangelization. In this letter, we invite local communities to integrate the Holy Father’s prayer intentions into their Jubilee activities. We have also emphasized the importance of accessing these intentions through the Pope’s official prayer platform (www.clicktopray.org).

A Time of Grace and Renewal

The Jubilee 2025, as the Pope explains in his bull Spes non confundit, is a particular time of grace in which a plenary indulgence is offered to those who live this journey of faith, prayer, and mercy. In this context, praying for the Holy Father’s intentions is a way to unite ourselves with the universal mission of the Church and to receive the graces of this Jubilee time.

As the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, we renew our commitment to accompany people and communities on this spiritual journey. We want to be a bridge that connects prayer with action, faith with life, God’s love with the needs of the world.

May Mary, our guide on this journey, help us live this Jubilee with an open heart, ready to embrace God’s will. And may the Heart of Jesus, the source of mercy and hope, inspire us to be witnesses of His love in the world.
