In solidarity with Myanmar: 17 million affected by recent earthquake

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that shook Myanmar on 28 March, the Xavier Network is actively supporting the Jesuits within the country to deliver critical relief to those affected by the natural disaster. With epicentres near the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing, the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock caused widespread destruction, impacting more than 17.2 million people across the country, according to reports. Over 3,500 people have died, and many other people are injured and/or missing.

The immediate aftermath has also left many people homeless, and many others do not have access to essential services such as clean water, sanitation and health care. In the midst of this, the Jesuits – with strong ties to local communities – are doing their best to provide emergency aid and are planning to accompany those impacted for the coming months.

This recent disaster comes at a time when Myanmar was already grappling with a severe humanitarian crises driven by ongoing conflict, displacement, economic hardship and previous disasters. The 28 March earthquakes have not only brought existing vulnerabilities to the fore, but have also created new ones. In response, the Xavier Network and its members are mobilizing resources, but are also seeking your assistance and solidarity to help the people of Myanmar to recover and rebuild their lives with dignity.
