USJ’s Campus Ministry: Nurturing Spiritual Growth and Service

The Campus Ministry of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) offers a space for dialogue, sharing, and Christian education, open to all who seek to deepen their faith and live out Gospel values. Rooted in the Ignatian tradition, it accompanies students and staff in their academic and personal journeys, helping them integrate faith, service, and reflection into their daily lives.

Throughout the year, the Campus Ministry leads various initiatives that bring the USJ Community together in faith and action. From observing Christian practices during the liturgical year to Ignatian retreats, each event is designed to foster a sense of belonging and purpose. For example, during Holy Week, students and volunteers take part in missions that embody the Jesuit call to serve those on the margins, bringing not only material support but also human warmth and dignity to struggling families. Preparing and sharing meals becomes an act of communion, a tangible expression of Christ’s love for the poor. Similarly, the annual Christmas initiative is more than a gesture of generosity – it is a moment of sharing that reminds us of Christ’s call to serve others with joy and humility. These initiatives not only provide material support but also build human connections, reinforcing the idea that faith is lived through action and service.

Inter-campus gatherings are more than just a break from the hustle and bustle of college life; they are a unique opportunity for students to pause, reflect, and discern their path forward. These gatherings resonate deeply with the Jesuit tradition of finding God in all things. Through prayer, fellowship, and discussion, participants step back from their academic pressures and focus on their deeper aspirations.

Education, a pillar of Jesuit spirituality, also stands at the heart of the Campus Ministry’s mission. Through discussions and academic reflections, students and staff explore the rich legacy of the Jesuits in Lebanon, particularly their role in shaping the country’s educational landscape. Events such as Jesuit Week offer a platform for engaging with contemporary challenges, inviting the USJ Community to reflect on themes of ethics, governance, and social responsibility – issues deeply embedded in the Jesuit tradition of forming men and women for others.

Retreats and volunteer weekends further enrich the spiritual fabric of USJ, offering spaces for silence, contemplation, and fraternity. By drawing inspiration from Saint Ignatius of Loyola, students are encouraged to find God in their everyday lives and make decisions that align with their values. This emphasis on self-examination and growth ensures that Jesuit teachings remain relevant, guiding students beyond their university years.

The Campus Ministry’s mission extends to staff as well, providing opportunities for formation and shared experiences. Outings and educational trips deepen their connection to USJ’s Jesuit heritage, strengthening the bonds that unite them in a common mission. More than moments of leisure, these gatherings cultivate a shared identity rooted in the values of service, reflection, and community.

As USJ marked its 150th anniversary, the Campus Ministry’s role in preserving and renewing the University’s Jesuit mission is more vital than ever. A university is more than a place of learning; it is a living community shaped by a vision of faith and justice. Through reflection, action, and solidarity, the Campus Ministry ensures that the spirit of the Jesuits remains a powerful force, inspiring students and staff alike to live lives of service, integrity, and faith.
