Leading a Discernment in common in Educational Institutions | Ignite the Way

In the sixteenth episode of Ignite the Way video series, Fr Stephen Sundborg, SJ, former president and current chancellor of Seattle University, discusses the application of “discernment in common” within boards of institutions such as universities and schools. He emphasizes that discernment in common focuses on mission and purpose, which boards are responsible for safeguarding. However, because board members often come from corporate or civic backgrounds unfamiliar with this spiritual process, special considerations are necessary.

Fr Sundborg highlights the importance of clarifying the issue at hand, distinguishing discernment from decision-making, creating a prayerful and silent environment free from debate, and having a skilled facilitator who understands governance. He stresses that discernment may not always lead to a concrete outcome but enriches the decision-making process by allowing members to express their heartfelt responses. Proper preparation enables all board members, regardless of faith, to participate effectively, demonstrating the universal presence of the Holy Spirit.
