Discernment Beyond Boundaries | Ignite the Way

In the fourth episode of the Ignite the Way series on Discernment in Common, Francis Pudhicherry, a Jesuit from Gujarat, India, reflects on the practice of discernment within a multi-religious and multicultural context such as India. Addressing those who facilitate discernment in common among interreligious groups, he emphasizes that the process begins with shared life experiences and a commitment to the common good, rather than individual or group interests.

Drawing on classical Indian spiritual texts such as the Viveka Chudamani and the Bhagavad Gita, he identifies key principles for community discernment: respect for others, inner stillness, acknowledgment of struggle, and selfless action (Nishkama Karma). As he notes, “discernment requires preparation, a sincere desire, the right disposition, and a proper method”.

Ultimately, Francis advocates for dialogue rooted in faith, unity, and mutual respect as a pathway to overcoming differences and fostering harmonious communal life.
