Supporting a diocese through Discernment in Common | Ignite the Way

Fr Joseph Xavier, SJ, a Jesuit priest from Madurai, India, shares his involvement with the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), which oversees 132 dioceses. Over the past few years, he has facilitated a spiritual discernment process across 14 regions, engaging bishops, clergy, religious members, laity, and youth to reflect on how God wants the Church in India to be different by 2033. Using spiritual conversation methodologies, they fostered deep listening and collaboration, leading to a unifying vision where diverse groups contribute their skills to support a thriving, inclusive Church. Despite challenges and epochal changes, the Holy Spirit has guided the Conference and dioceses to embrace this synodal journey. This process has energized commissions to develop 10-year plans aligned with God’s call.

Fr Xavier highlights the growing enthusiasm among Church members and the ongoing efforts to restructure commissions for greater effectiveness. He emphasizes the importance of prayerful listening to the Holy Spirit and encourages the Church family to continue moving forward in faith and unity.
