Roberto Jaramillo SJ, next Director of the Secretariat for Social Justice and Ecology (SJES)

Father General has appointed Fr. Roberto Jaramillo, from the Province of Colombia, as the next Director of the Secretariat for Social Justice and Ecology. He will succeed Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj, from the Calcutta Province, who has been serving at the General Curia since 2017.

Roberto Jaramillo, 61, joined the Society of Jesus in 1981 and was ordained a priest in 1993 after completing his first studies in philosophy and theology in Colombia. He then worked in the Amazon region of Brazil between 1995 and 2014. It was during this period that he pursued a doctorate in social anthropology in Paris and did his Tertianship in Montreal (Canada) before taking his final vows in 2003. He also served as Superior of the Brazilian Amazon Region before working with indigenous communities on the border of Brazil and Guyana.

In 2014, he was missioned to Lima, to the headquarters of the CPAL (Conference of Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean) as delegate for social apostolate for four years. Following that, in 2018, he became President of the Conference, a position he held until last April. He will take on his new role on 8 January 2024.
