Enhancing leadership: A Colloquium for New Major Superiors

From 23 March to 5 April, 13 newly-appointed Major Superiors within the Society gathered in the General Curia for a Colloquium aimed at equipping them for their leadership responsibilities. The meeting served as a vital moment of reflection, preparation and connection, enhancing their knowledge in order for them to better serve in their positions, and strengthen the universal body of the Society.

A key aspect of the 2-week long Colloquium was the opportunity to engage in discussions on important themes relevant to their mission. Through interactive sessions with the heads of different offices and secretariats in the Curia, the different participants exchanged experiences, insights and strategies that are sure to come in handy as they carry out their leadership roles in their respective Provinces.

One essential focus of the meeting is fostering a strong relationship between the Provincials/Major Superiors and Father General. An indispensable element of the duty of Major Superiors is being accountable to Father General, informing him about the progress of the Province and its important matters, including the Province’s plans and projects.

The Colloquium afforded the participants the opportunity to gain a deeper knowledge of the Curia, including its key offices, functions and personnel. This knowledge is important, as it is crucial for effective collaboration between Provinces and the General Curia. Time was also set aside for each Major Superior to meet with their respective Regional Assistants.

In addition, the meeting highlighted the global nature of the Society of Jesus, by fostering interaction among the 13 participants who come from different Provinces, nationalities and cultural backgrounds. As Provincials, they have the responsibility for the good government of not just only their Provinces, but, in union with Father General, they work for the good government of the whole Society of Jesus. This global dimension also underscores unity and collaboration beyond administrative boundaries.

Beyond the structured sessions of the Colloquium, the gathering served as a much-needed opportunity for them to step back from their everyday responsibilities and engage in some rest and renewal. As they left the Colloquium, the Major Superiors carried with them not only a wealth of knowledge and insights but also a renewed sense of purpose. The connections they forged and the conversations they had undoubtedly filled their hearts and minds with fresh inspiration. This renewed strength is essential as they return to their Provinces. They are now equipped with tools that will enhance their mission and foster a greater impact in their Provinces.
