New General Counsellor and Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar

Father General Arturo Sosa has appointed Fr John Kobina Ghansah as the new Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar and General Counsellor.

Fr Ghansah, currently Provincial of the North-West Africa Province (ANW), will assume his new role on 6 January 2027, succeeding FrFratern Masawe (AOR) whose position is currently being held ad interimby Fr Chukwuyenum Afiawari (ANW). Although stepping down as Regional Assistant, Fr Masawe will continue to serve the Society as a General Counsellor and Assistant ad providentiam.

Born in 1963, Fr Ghansah entered the Society in 1984 and was ordained a priest on 29 June 1996.Throughout his journey in the Society of Jesus, he has served in parish pastoral work and various apostolates, with a particular emphasis on the formation of young Jesuits.He previously served as Socius to the Novice Master, then Novice Master, Provincial Assistant for Formation, and Rector of Hekima University College in Nairobi. Since 29 June 2023, he was appointed Provincial of the North-West Africa Province.

In his new role as Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar and General Counsellor, Fr Ghansah will draw upon this rich background of apostolic and governance experience to assist Father General in his leadership of the universal Society.
