Meeting of Major Superiors 2025: “Pilgrims on Christ’s Mission”
Fr Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has officially convoked a Meeting of Major Superiors (MMS), to be held in Rome this coming October. These meetings are as rare as they are important, with the last MMS held in 2000 and 2005. Neither a social gathering nor a conclusion-driven event, a MMS is the Jesuit equivalent of a “blue sky” think tank meant to consider the state, the problems and the initiatives of the universal Society (Decree 13 of the 32st General Congregation). In short, a MMS is an opportunity for the worldwide Society of Jesus to listen to concerns from every corner of ministry, discern the best possible way for the Society of Jesus to address those concerns, then act.
Much has happened since General Congregation 36 closed in November of 2016, the same Congregation that elected Fr Sosa as Superior General and gave him a mission from the body of the Society of Jesus. The Society of Jesus received the Universal Apostolic Preferences as a 10-year mission from Pope Francis. The Society of Jesus recommitted itself to a simpler life by revising and renewing its Statutes on Religious Poverty and the Instruction for Administration and Finances. The 71st Congregation of Procurators kicked off a worldwide examen that culminated in the De Statu Societatis report. The Society also created the “Women’s Commission” to examine the role of women in the mission of the Jesuits, an initiative to spur interest in the brother’s vocation, a renewed push for networks between Jesuit apostolates across the planet, and programs to spur ecological conservation and formation of lay partners. These projects and initiatives, and much more, will be on the table during the MMS. Each Major Superior will be able to bring the wisdom, concerns and discernment from their part of the world to Rome for consideration by their brothers.
In the words of Fr General, “The General Congregation again urged the Society to respond courageously to the signs by which the Holy Spirit is leading us to serve in the best way the mission entrusted by the Lord Jesus to the Church. A meeting to contemplate together Jesus, the Lord of history, because when looking to Him we do not lose our way. It will therefore be a time of prayer, spiritual conversation and shared reflection, as companions and friends in the Lord.”
Please pray for the Major Superiors, the men for which they are responsible, the partners with whom they are on mission, and the people that they serve.
General Congregation 36.
