Leading Discernment in Common in a religious community | Ignite the Way
Fr Rachans Lukose, SJ, in the fourteenth episode of Ignite the Way video series, reflects on the process of communal discernment within religious communities, emphasizing its importance as a means to seek and follow God's will collectively. Drawing from personal experience in guiding religious groups, he highlights several key elements necessary for effective communal discernment.
Central to this process is cultivating the right disposition – one marked by interior freedom and openness – primarily achieved through prayer. Prayer fosters a deeper interior disposition that allows members to listen attentively, both to their own inner experiences and to the voices of their companions. This dual listening is crucial for discerning God’s voice amidst personal biases, emotional attachments, or preconceived notions that might otherwise cloud judgment.
Fr Lukose underscores the need to pause and reflect when such hindrances arise, encouraging silence and self-examination to regain clarity and freedom. Spiritual conversation within the community is identified as a vital tool that facilitates deeper listening, allowing members to collectively uncover God’s guidance. Ultimately, communal discernment aims to reveal God’s will for the community’s present mission and direction. The process demands prayer, openness, spiritual dialogue, and a conscious effort to detach from personal attachments, establishing a foundation upon which the true voice of God can emerge clearly.
