How to develop a culture of common discernment | Ignite the Way

Fr Joseph Anthony de Mello, SJ, in the fifteenth episode of Ignite the Way video series discusses the importance of cultivating a culture of discernment in our daily lives. Discernment, often associated with major decisions like opening communities or expanding ministries, is in fact a continuous process that involves recognizing the interplay of two forces: one that promotes life and another that leads to destruction.

He emphasizes that discernment is not a one-time event but a constant awareness of the movement of spirits within and around us. In a world filled with distractions, superficiality, and negativity, it is crucial to pause, reflect, and read the signs of the times to identify both life-promoting and destructive impulses. He highlights the need for experience, reflection, and action as a pedagogy for discernment, encouraging practices such as prayer, examination of consciousness, gratitude journaling, and recitation of mantras to stay connected with the divine.

For community leaders and spiritual guides, engaging in consultation and dialogue helps discern both personal and communal interior movements. Fr De Mello stresses that the process of discernment is more important than the outcome, as it keeps us attuned to the workings of the Spirit. Echoing Pope Francis, he calls for inviting the Holy Spirit into daily life to make choices that promote life and align with our mission.
