Administration and good administration: an important dimension of leadership
This week, from 13 to 17 September, Father General is meeting with his Extended Council. This Council includes not only the Assistants who support him on a daily basis in the Curia, but also the Heads of the Secretariats and the Presidents of the six Jesuit Conferences (six regions of the world).
The main theme for prayer, reflection and sharing this time is very specific. It is the revision of an important document for the governance of the Society at all levels, General Curia, Conferences, Provinces, communities and works: the Instruction on the Administration of Goods. A committee has been working on this revision for a year and a half. The General Treasurer, Fr Tom McClain, and his Assistants will report on its work.
For Father General, this exercise is not primarily a matter of management, but of guiding our ways of dealing with money and material goods so that Jesuits live their vow of poverty in an even better way. The Council is looking at the challenges in this area that emerge in relation to financial issues, the use of material goods, and concrete practices in communities and works.
In
a few days’ time, the General Treasurer will offer us his reflections on this
theme of the September meeting of the Consiglio
Allargato. Stay tuned!
