An Extended Council with a Difference
Three times every year, Father General meets with the members of his “Extended Council”. The meeting - generally a weeklong event - gathers around a theme, with presentations, discussions and deliberations around matters that affect the life and the mission of the Society of Jesus.
However, this time, the upcoming “Consiglio Allargato”, as it called in Italian, will be different from the regular format. It will be conducted within the framework of a retreat, marking a significant shift in how these meetings are approached. From 6 - 14 September, Father General, thirteen General Counsellors, the Presidents of the six Conferences, the General Treasurer, the Secretary of the Society and the four Secretaries (Faith, Education, Higher Education, Social Justice and Ecology) will be at Casa Manresa, Villa San Pastore, in Rome for an 8-day retreat.
The retreat will be led by Frs Franck Janin (EOF), Francisco José Ruiz Pérez (ESP) and Antonio Moreno (PHI). Their leadership is expected to guide the members of the Extended Council into a spiritual experience, grounding the work of the Council in a space of prayerful contemplation and reflection.
Sharing the charism and collaborating in the
mission
will be the common thread running through the retreat. The De Statu
Societatis (DSS), sent on 31 July 2023 following the Congregation of
Procurators (and past General Congregations), placed particular emphasis on the
theme of collaboration and the importance of reflecting on this dimension as
constitutive of the identity and charism of the Society of Jesus. “We are
following an inspiration of the Spirit that invites Jesuits and others to share
the apostolates inspired by the charism inherited from Ignatius of Loyola and
the first companions.” (Fr Arturo Sosa, DSS, p. 86)
