75 Jesuits Celebrate 75 Years: Collegio Bellarmino’s Journey of Service through Studies
This year the Collegio San Roberto Bellarmino in Rome celebrates its 75th anniversary. As a Jesuit community for advanced studies, the “Bellarmino” has shaped generations of Jesuits throughout the world, preparing them to serve both the Church and their local communities. To commemorate this milestone, the Bellarmino is unveiling a new website that offers the global Jesuit family a closer look at this unique institution, its mission, and its lasting legacy.
A History of Academic Life and Service
For 75 years, the Collegio Bellarmino has been a place where young Jesuit priests and brothers have come to deepen their intellectual formation. The majority of students pursue advanced degrees at the Pontifical Gregorian University, which has its origins in the historic Collegio Romano, founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1551. Renowned for its international faculty and rigorous academics, the Gregorian offers Licentiate and Doctoral programs in fields like theology, philosophy, psychology, canon law, church history, spirituality, sociology, leadership and management, among others.
“The goal here is to
form men who are not only intellectually prepared but also ready to engage with
the complex challenges of our world”, said Fr Orlando Torres, SJ, now spiritual
director at the Bellarmino. “This combination of deep study and pastoral
readiness is at the heart of our Jesuit mission.”
A Global Community in Rome
One of the most unique features of the Collegio Bellarmino, in addition to its sizable membership, is its international character. Currently, 75 Jesuits from all over the world live and study at the Bellarmino, representing a rich diversity of cultures, languages, and perspectives. The Society of Jesus throughout the world converges here to foster a unique intercultural opportunity for mutual enrichment, opening doors for future collaboration.
Living in the heart
of Rome, these Jesuits benefit from access not only to academic institutions of
Jesuit lore but also to the rich spiritual and cultural heritage the city has
to offer. Just a few steps away from the Bellarmino, Jesuit students have the
opportunity to be nourished by the Jesuit patrimony of the historic Rooms of St
Ignatius and the earliest foundational Jesuit churches. A number of students
are actively involved in parish ministry, offering sacramental services to the
local community. “It’s a unique privilege to serve in Rome”, said Martin
Rondelet, the coordinator of students at the Bellarmino. “The experience here
shapes us to be both competent and compassionate companions; it’s a chance to
connect with the universal Church in a new and profound way.”
The Jesuit Tradition: Studies for Service
Deeply rooted in the spirituality of St Ignatius Loyola, Jesuits exercise their studies for the sake of the mission. This tradition goes back to the founding of the Society of Jesus, when St Ignatius realized that intellectual preparation was essential for strengthening their service and ministry to others. Today, Jesuits at the Bellarmino continue this legacy, pursuing academic excellence not just for their own growth, but for their divine end: the greater glory of God and the good of souls.
A New Digital Presence
As part of the 75th
anniversary celebration, the Bellarmino is launching a new website that
showcases its mission and life. This platform will offer Jesuits worldwide a
glimpse into what makes the Bellarmino a dynamic and vibrant community. For
those in the wider Jesuit family, especially alumni, this new site serves as an
invitation to reconnect with the Bellarmino, explore its current and historic mission,
and reflect on the role it has played in forming so many men for the Society of
Jesus. “We’re proud of our history, but we’re even more excited about
what’s to come”, said Fr João Renato Eidt, rector of the Collegio Bellarmino.
