Fr Álvaro Pacheco Carve appointed Provincial of Argentina-Uruguay Province

Father General Arturo Sosa has appointed Fr Álvaro Pacheco Carve as the new Provincial of the Argentina-Uruguay Province.

Fr Álvaro was born in Montevideo on 7 October 1965 and has a background in law. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Córdoba in 2001. His academic journey includes studying philosophy at the Faculty of Theology of Uruguay, and theology at the Centre Sèvres (Paris). Following that, he pursued postgraduate studies, earning a Master’s and Doctorate in Canon Law and Philosophy of Law from Université Paris II, Institut Catholique de Paris and Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA).

In 2010, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Nicolás Cotugno, SDB, at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Montevideo. Since then, he has served in various roles including Director of the Department of Philosophy, Dean of Law, and Vice-Rector for University Environment at the Catholic University of Uruguay (2011-2021). Additionally, he has served as Parish Administrator of Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Montevideo (2014-2018), and is a Judge of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Montevideo, a role he has held since 2012. Currently, Fr Álvaro is the Rector of the Seminary College in Montevideo and the Superior of its community.
