Father General’s visit to Ukraine: A Message of Hope and Solidarity
In a significant moment for the Jesuits in Ukraine, Father General Arturo Sosa made his first official visit to Ukraine from 6–10 November. His visit, which comes at a time of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, brings hope and solidarity to a country that has been a crossroads of complex political, social, economic, and humanitarian challenges.
The Ukrainian mission, which is a part of the Southern Poland Province, consists of communities in Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi. Jesuits there are deeply committed to service, providing support in parishes, military chaplaincy, retreats and working with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) which is involved in offering assistance to many who have had their lives disrupted due to the war.
One major highlight of Father General’s 5-day visit was the inauguration of “Space of Hope” – a center dedicated to providing psychological and spiritual support for Ukrainians affected by the visible and invisible trauma of the ongoing conflict. Father General underscored its purpose as a beacon of resilience, remarking that it strives to be “a place of hope in the face of the ongoing war”.
Throughout his visit, Father General conveyed a clear message referring to the mission of the Society of Jesus in the world and particularly to the Jesuits serving in Ukraine: the Jesuit mission is rooted in service to others. Father Sosa’s presence was a powerful sign of support, bringing hope to the Jesuits on the ground and reinforcing their commitment to service of others.
