Spirituality and Stewardship: Newly appointed Treasurers gather at the General Curia

Newly appointed Treasurers and assistant Treasurers from various Provinces and Regions of the Society of Jesus gathered at the General Curia in Rome for a workshop on the Statutes on Religious Poverty in the Society of Jesus and Instruction for Administration and Finances (SOP-IAF) from 3-7 February 2025. The Treasurers came from 23 Provinces/Regions of the Society of Jesus.

Throughout the event organized by the General Treasurer’s Office of the Society of Jesus, the participants explored various aspects of the SOP-IAF. The General Procurator, Fr Benoît Malvaux, and the Secretary, Fr Antoine Kerhuel, also contributed insights from their respective areas of expertise.

On the final day of the workshop, Father General Arturo Sosa addressed the Treasurers, emphasizing that their “service is apostolic”. He noted that, in the life-mission of the Society, there is no distinction between apostolic work and other types of work. Reflecting on how Jesus instructed the apostles to engage with people and their responsibilities, he stressed that the “work of the Treasurer is an apostolate” and pointed at the multiplication of the loaves (Lk 9:10-17) and the parable of the Samaritan (Lk 10:25-37), as clear teachings in this regard.

Father General went on to warn the participants against the temptation to exercise their functions in a “mundane” way as one who has power over others, and expressed his understanding of a certain nostalgia among those who are sent to the service of government, direction or administration for a more apostolic life. He invited them to pray for the grace “to live our service as an authentic apostolate and to give all our apostolic energy to this important service”.

The 5-day workshop included more than just meetings; participants shared diverse experiences and attended Mass at the Rooms of St Ignatius, fostering solidarity among Treasurers in their shared mission.
