A Safeguarding Course for JGNS: the experience of Loyola Secondary School in Wau

The Loyola Secondary School in Wau, South Sudan, is strongly committed to staff formation and has invited a group of teachers and professionals to participate in the pilot of the new course “Safeguarding from an Ignatian Perspective: Theology Meets the Science of Abuse Prevention to Protect All”.

Due to specific logistical circumstances, the course materials have been adapted, allowing participants to follow the training by projecting all content onto a TV. Their dedication, despite challenging conditions, is truly inspiring for the entire Jesuit Global Network of Schools (JGNS).

The course is part of a broader safeguarding training and formation program for social impact, launched by Fr General in December 2023, with additional courses planned for the future. Currently, more than 500 educators and professionals working in schools in different parts of the world, belonging to the Jesuit Global Network of Schools, are attending the course.

The Promotion of a Consistent Culture of Protection (PCCP) is a project established in the Society of Jesus to help fulfil the mandate entrusted to Fr General by the General Congregation 36 (2016), ‘to continue working with the Major Superiors and Conferences to promote, within the communities and ministries of the Society, a consistent culture of protection and safety for minors’. The course was developed by PCCP Coordinators Fr John Guiney, SJ, and Dr Sandra Racionero-Plaza.

The PCCP programme is viewed as a strategic initiative for social impact, contributing to the ongoing efforts of the Society to create a protective environment for all its members. The current focus is on designing the rollout of the training programme and developing specific curricula for each apostolic area.
