Jesuits and the Ministry of Ecumenism

The Society of Jesus has a long tradition of engaging in ecumenism within the Catholic Church. A recent meeting in Rome, organized by the Secretary for the Service of Faith, highlighted new insights into Christian unity and the challenges it faces today.

In the video, three Jesuit experts – Dorian Llywelyn, Markus Schmidt, and Thomas D. Hughson – reflect on the Jesuit approach to dialogue, collaboration, and reconciliation among Christian traditions. They acknowledge the difficulties along the path to unity: doctrinal disagreements, theological sensitivities, institutional barriers, and historical wounds.

Yet the Jesuit spirit encourages perseverance in humility, focusing on shared foundations – the Trinity, Christ, and the Scriptures – while holding differences with respect. Ecumenism, they stress, is not about erasing identities but about fostering rooted and respectful encounters.

Above all, the video reminds us that unity is not a final destination but a journey – one that requires listening, humility, and a shared search for truth.
