New Provincial Appointed for Korea Province
Father General has appointed Fr Hwang Jeong-yeon Javier as the Provincial of the Korean Province.
Born in 1967 in Seoul, Fr Hwang entered the Society in 1996. He completed a Master of Arts in Philosophy at the Graduate School of Theology of Sogang University in 2001 and a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology at Sogang University’s Graduate School of Education in 2003.
After two years working in vocation promotion during his Regency, he moved to Berkeley for theological studies at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University and completed a Master of Divinity. He was ordained a priest in June 2006 at Myeong-dong Cathedral in Seoul.
Seeking to integrate education, psychology, and pastoral ministry, he went on to complete a Ph.D. in Education at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2011. He later continued this focus in Rome, completing a Licentiate in Psychology at the Institute of Psychology of the Pontifical Gregorian University. He stayed on as a professor there from 2011 to 2024, teaching, doing research, and contributing to the formation of students and professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
He professed his Final Vows on 2 February 2017 and served as the Procurator elect of the Korea Province at the 71st Congregation of Procurators in Loyola in 2023.
In 2024, he assumed the position of Professor of Counseling Psychology at the Graduate School of Sogang University and served as Director of the Center for Human Rights and Gender Equality. In the same year, he was appointed Consultor to the Provincial of the Korea Province.
Fr Hwang takes up his new role as Provincial on 11 February 2026.
