João (born Entre Douro e Minho) was the nephew of the ship’s captain who was taking missionaries to Brazil when the boat was captured by Calvinist corsairs. João was a candidate to enter the Society. He was martyred, along with 39 other Jesuits led by Father Igácio de Azevedo.
For more details of the story of this group, see the account listed under the name of Blessed Igácio de Azevedo.
