JESUITS – The Society of Jesus in the world – 2021

This Friday, 27 November, the Communications Office of the General Curia presented the latest edition of the annual magazine JESUITS - The Society of Jesus in the World. It was distributed to all the Jesuits and lay members of the Curia.

Over one year ago, Father General promulgated the four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP) of the Society of Jesus for the years 2019-2029. We can ask ourselves two questions: how they are being experienced as a single whole, and how can we prepare for the Ignatian Year 2021-2022, which will be inaugurated next May? This edition of some forty articles attempts to answer these questions.

Fr. Arturo Sosa himself suggested these two themes to the editorial board. His visits to a number of Provinces left him with the impression that, while the UAPs were generally well received, Jesuits and institutions had a tendency to identify with one or other of the Preferences, leaving the other three in the background. However, the 36th General Congregation urged all - Jesuits, partners, and institutions - to align their planning with all four apostolic preferences. This is necessary if they are to be apostolically effective.

In preparation for the Ignatian Year, Father General specifically proposed the theme of conversion. This is because our celebrations primarily focus to the 500th anniversary of the experience of conversion that the soldier Iñigo de Loyola underwent when, in defence of Pamplona, a cannonball struck him on 22 May 1521. This theme may appear challenging, even daunting. However, JESUITS 2021 brings together accessible and inspiring testimonies of both personal and institutional conversion.

More specifically, the 2021 edition of the Annuario, as it is commonly known, offers, in the first place, a tribute to Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, the former Superior General, who passed away during the year. Then, articles on each of the two chosen themes - the UAPs and the preparation for the Ignatian year - follow. Finally, there is a short section which presents articles on anniversaries or events that, although not related to the main themes, merit mention.

The Curia has already distributed the magazine in the Roman area. The dispatch to international destinations, using the services of Grupo de Comunicación Loyola, in Spain, is also virtually completed. Our aim is for all orders from the Provinces and Regions to arrive at their destination well before Christmas, so that the publication can be offered as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, the present pandemic is slowing down the mail in many countries; in some cases, postal services are not operating at all. We are working to find alternative solutions.

JESUITS 2021 - The Society of Jesus in the world, focuses on the life that animates the universal Society! If you would like copies additional to those ordered, there are a number in reserve, in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. Please do not hesitate to contact Caterina Talloru in theCommunications Office.
