New President of CPAL: Fr. Rafael Garrido
On 23 January, Father General Arturo Sosa signed the letter announcing the next President of the Conference of Latin American Provincials (CPAL). It will be Fr. Rafael Garrido (age 50), from the Province of Venezuela. He was born in 1972 and joined the Society of Jesus in 1992. He studied philosophy at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, in Caracas, and theology at the Instituto de Teología para Religiosos (ITER) in the same city. He will succeed Fr Roberto Jaramillo who has been holding this responsibility since March 2017.
Rafael Garrido recently completed his mission as Provincial of the Jesuits of Venezuela (2016-2022). Previously he had worked in various apostolates collaborating in vocation promotion and pastoral ministry at the Instituto San Javier del Valle Fe y Alegría (2007-2011) as Vice-superior of San Javier, and later as Superior of the Jesús Obrero community and National Director of the Huellas youth movement (2011-2016). He was also Province consultor and coordinator of the commission for youth ministry.
The date of assuming office will be announced in due course.
