San Marcellino: Eight decades of social care, compassion and hope

San Marcellino, a social centre in Genoa, Italy, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Founded in 1945 to support Genoese who had lost everything due to war, San Marcellino has consistently dedicated itself to uplifting the most vulnerable members of society.

Today, the San Marcellino Association primarily focuses on assisting homeless individuals, restoring the dignity of people in serious hardship and guiding them towards a renewed sense of purpose. Their outreach begins with a mobile unit that engages with people in the streets leading them to a Listening Centre which welcomes up to a hundred individuals daily. The centre offers showers, bathrooms, laundry, barbing and other self-care services, including the possibility of accommodation for people in need.

A key motivation of San Marcellino’s work lies in its holistic approach to social assistance. The centre addresses immediate needs and promotes personal development that empowers individuals to regain confidence and reintegrate into society.
