Fr Chakkalakkal appointed Provincial for Newly-Constituted Darjeeling-Nepal Province
Father General Arturo Sosa has appointed Fr Shajumon Chakkalakkal as the Provincial of the Darjeeling-Nepal Province (DAN).
On 12 April 2025, Father General united the Darjeeling Province with the Nepal Region by a Decree, thereby constituting a new Province. The Decree comes into effect on 31 July 2025, and Fr Chakkalakkal will be the pioneer Provincial.
Born in Kerala in 1966, Fr Chakkalakkal joined the Society of Jesus in 1985. Following his ordination in 2001, he undertook pastoral ministry before becoming involved in formation. He first served as Socius to the Novice Master and then as Novice Master.
From 2012, he worked at St Joseph’s College, Darjeeling as a teacher, student counsellor and Vice Superior of the Jesuit Community. He then served at St Joseph’s School, Darjeeling, as its rector and principal. From 2018-2020, he was Socius to the Provincial of Darjeeling. Subsequently, he was appointed Socius to the President of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia, a position he held until he became the Provincial of the Darjeeling Province in December 2023.
