Father Jorge William Hernández Díaz, SJ, appointed Provincial of the Caribbean Province
Superior General Arturo Sosa, SJ, has appointed Father Jorge William Hernández Díaz, SJ, as Provincial of the Caribbean Province.
He currently serves as superior of the San Ignacio Residence–Provincial Curia, as vicar of the Santísima Trinidad University Parish in Santo Domingo, and as delegate for the Dominican Republic within the Caribbean Province.
Father Hernández was born on 22 October 1974 in Cuba. He entered the Society of Jesus on 31 July 1997 and was ordained a priest on 30 September 2006. He completed his tertianship in Goa, India, in 2012.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Havana (1992-1997). After entering the Society, he completed the novitiate (1997-1999), followed by juniorate and philosophy studies in Havana and Santo Domingo (1999-2001). He then undertook regency at the novitiate in Santiago de los Caballeros (2001-2003) and later completed a bachelor’s degree in Ecclesiastical Studies in Granada, Spain (2003-2006). He went on to earn a master’s degree in Systematic Theology there (2014-2016).
He served as coordinator of youth and vocational ministry and pre-novitiate formator in Camagüey (2006-2012), and as pastor of San José Parish in the same city (2007-2012). He was national director of the Loyola Faith and Culture Centers in Havana (2012-2014), and later director of Loyola School in Santo Domingo (2017-2023).
The date he will take office has not yet been confirmed but is expected to be around the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola.
