The Xavier Learning Community – Jesuit education for the marginalized of Thailand
Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, understood the power of education to transform and empower. It is no surprise then, that education has been a part of the Jesuit mission since the start of the order. Fr General Arturo Sosa, SJ, travelled to the Mae Chan district, at the edge of the “Golden Triangle” – a mountainous region where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge – to visit one of the latest Jesuit iterations of that commitment to education: the Xavier Learning Community (XLC).
Founded by the Jesuits of Thailand in 2016, XLC is a residential higher education institution designed specifically to provide education for young people from marginalized ethnic communities in northern Thailand and its neighbours. Less than 20 minutes from the Golden Triangle, XLC serves a region known for its cultural diversity. Many of XLC’s students belong to hill tribe communities – including Karen, Akha, Hmong, and Lahu – for whom higher education is often inaccessible because of economic hardship and geographic isolation. XLC provides students with scholarships, accommodation, a supportive learning environment, leadership development, and personal formation inspired by the Jesuit tradition of educating “men and women for others”.
There are currently 134 students housed in two dorms, one for men and one for women, on the XLC campus. The students pay 5,000 baht a semester (approximately 130 euro) and the remainder of the costs for tuition, housing and food are covered by XLC and its generous benefactors. In turn, aside from their studies, each student is expected to spend some of their time helping to maintain the school and attached gardens. For students born in the Golden Triangle who don't have papers, XLC offers a special opportunity: completion of the program grants full Thai citizenship. This model of education creates not only a school, but a community where students,, faculty and staff all take pride in their centre. This unique community was honoured with a visitation by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who herself was taught by a Jesuit, when she visited XLC on 27 February 2024 in recognition of the good work being done by the centre.
By partnering with accredited institutions such as Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University and Saengtham College, XLC is able to offer bachelor’s degrees, while simultaneously providing practical vocational training in English proficiency, business and entrepreneurship. By combining classroom instruction with community living, service activities, leadership opportunities and personal development, XLC offers a holistic educational experience that not only educates but empowers.
Beyond academics, Xavier Learning Community places strong emphasis on character formation and social responsibility. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and a commitment to serving their communities. The Ignatian educational philosophy promotes reflection, compassion, and leadership, preparing graduates not only for professional success but also for meaningful contributions to society. The residential nature of the program fosters close relationships among students, faculty, and staff, creating a supportive and diverse learning community.
XLC has already demonstrated a positive impact on the lives of its graduates and their communities. Many alumni have become English teachers, non-profit workers, community leaders, and development practitioners who use their education to improve opportunities for others. By equipping students with language skills, professional knowledge, and confidence, the institution helps break cycles of poverty while encouraging graduates to return and serve their home communities.
Today, Xavier Learning Community continues to grow as an innovative model of inclusive higher education in Thailand. Its mission extends beyond providing university-level instruction to fostering hope, dignity, and opportunity for young people from underserved backgrounds. Through its commitment to academic excellence, holistic formation, and social justice, XLC remains an important force for educational access and community development in the Chiang Rai region and beyond.
