Rediscovering the Gift of the Priesthood in the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025
The Jubilee Year of Hope offers the Church a sacred time for renewal, reconciliation, and revival. On June 25, the Church sets aside a special moment for the Jubilee of Priests to honor and to celebrate the sacred calling of presbyters in their ministry to the faithful around the world. This moment is not simply a celebration for clergy but a profound occasion for the entire Church to reflect on the divine gift of the priesthood – a vocation rooted in the heart of Jesus Christ and essential to the life of the Church.
A Gift From Christ Himself
The ministerial priesthood does not find its origins in human invention or some superficial necessity, but in Jesus – the Eternal High Priest. At the Last Supper, on the night before His passion and death, our Lord instituted both the Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of Holy Orders. In saying, “Do this in memory of me”, Jesus conferred upon the Apostles – and their successors – the sacred mission to celebrate the mysteries of faith, to preach the Gospel, and to shepherd the people of God.
From that Upper Room of the Last Supper flows the uninterrupted line of Apostolic succession by which Christ continues to sanctify His Church through the ministry of ordained priests. The Priest’s identity, thus, is not drawn from his function or his status but from a sacramental configuration to Christ Himself, who continues to act through the Priest in the celebration of the sacraments. As Pope Paul VI said, “A priest no longer belongs to himself. His very spiritual life is conditioned by the communion of the brethren to whom his ministry is directed. He is at their disposal, at their service. Whatever helps to edify them is a matter of obligation for a priest.” (General Audience, 10 June 1970)
The ministry of priests in the service of hope
In the ongoing Jubilee Year of Hope, we are reminded that Priests are also servants of hope. In the confessional, every absolution offers the penitent the hope of mercy; at the celebration of every Mass, he brings forth the hope of eternal life through the Eucharist; in his ministry of preaching and pastoral care, he becomes a visible sign of hope that God walks with His people.
In a world marked with socioeconomic and geopolitical troubles, Priests stand out as ministers sent to pastor the flock of the Good Shepherd. As St John Paul II said, “Thanks to the priestly character, you share in the pastoral charism, which is a sign of a special relationship of likeness to Christ, the Good Shepherd” (Letter to Priests, Holy Thursday 1979). The special ministry of priests leads them to embody Christ’s healing presence. As shepherds in the likeness of the Good Shepherd, they guide, intercede for, and pour out their lives for the flock entrusted to them.
Pope Francis also highlighted the ministry of the priests in the service of hope. In Spes Non Confundit he reminds the clergy that their ministry must be rooted the certainty of Christ’s love which alone can heal the brokenhearted and renew the face of the earth. He stressed that Christian hope does not deceive or disappoint because it is grounded in the certainty that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
A time for renewal and gratitude
The Jubilee of Priests is not a mere, superficial commemoration. It is an invitation to interior renewal for all priests – a time to reinvigorate and recommit to their vocation, as well as an opportunity to inspire a new generation of priest. The Jubilee calls priests to return to the wellsprings of their vocation, to rekindle their fire for Jesus, and also to entrust their challenges, joys and sufferings to the High Priest who has called them to share in His ministry.
On the other hand, the Jubilee is a moment for the laity to pray for Priests and to offer gratitude to God for their service. The priest does not journey alone; he depends on the love and support of his family, friends and community. He is one called from among others, to serve and offer prayers to God on behalf of all.
Looking Ahead with Hope
As the Church journeys through the rest of the Jubilee Year of Hope, all Catholics are encouraged to pray for their priests, that they may be renewed in spirit and mission. For as St John Vianney, the patron saint of priests, once said, “The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.” In this Jubilee Year of Hope, may every priest rediscover that love – and may the world, through their witness, encounter the hope that does not disappoint.
